How to Cope When Life Gets Tough

hands and sunshineDo you ever wonder what life is all about? That’s the million-dollar question, isn’t it? Everyone wants to know the meaning of life. But that’s precisely the beauty of it. Life can be whatever you want it to be. For some, life is all about family. For others, life is work. For others still, life is about love.

I challenge everyone reading this to dig deep within yourself and find out what is at your core. What is life all about for you? What drives you? What pushes you forward? What makes your heart sing? You will discover why life is worth living.

Avoid Negativity

Once you discover that, hold on to it. Use that as your motivation. Because one thing everyone knows is this: life isn’t always easy. Sometimes, you get beaten down in every area of life, all at the same time. And when that happens, it is so easy to want to give up. It is so easy to get stuck in negative thinking. So easy to play the victim and think “why me” or “I’ll never get what I want in life.”

But these are precisely the types of thoughts I urge you to avoid. Negative breeds and attracts negative. When you fixate on your fears and your doubts and all the negative voices running through your head, you draw more negativity to you.

When you find yourself in a situation where bad things are happening, focus not only on what you are feeling but also what you are thinking. Your thoughts are much more powerful than many may realize. Instead of thinking life sucks, and I am going to give up, fight that feeling.

Re-Frame Your Thoughts

Put every ounce of energy you have into re-framing your thoughts. Find one thing to be happy or thankful for, even if it is something as simple as running water or food to eat. One thing that you are thankful for can make all the difference. It can be the catalyst that turns things around.

Whatever it is that gets you down in life, remember to fight. Sometimes, things don’t go the way you intended. Sometimes, it goes the exact opposite. But when that happens, keep fighting. Wake up every morning and face the day head-on. Because every obstacle makes you appreciate the successes. And there will be successes. Never forget this:

You did poorly on an exam
Keep studying
Don’t let the bad things in life defeat you
Because when you finally find that thing
That makes life great
You will look back at these times
And laugh for wanting to give up
So keep fighting
Fight for your life
Fight for happiness
Fight for love
Fight for your job
Fight to live

Life—a concept that sounds so simple, yet is made so complicated. But it doesn’t have to be. You just have to remember to keep living and keep fighting and wait for the day when life doesn’t feel difficult. Because I promise you, life wasn’t meant to be difficult. Our thoughts are the culprit of that.

Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Life

I always recommend a number of strategies for doing exactly this. Daily meditations and positive affirmations are extremely helpful. A gratitude journal is another way to get into a positive and grateful mindset and it helps eliminate negativity. Exercise and being in nature help to increase endorphins and decrease stress hormones. Regular chiropractic adjustments decrease stress hormones while at the same time increasing serotonin, dopamine and oxytocin. These all are feel-good hormones.
